Sundance is preparing its 2027 edition in Boulder, Colorado, following the announcement of its relocation from Utah. Information released by CU Boulder helps situate the planned calendar, university venues, and announced changes to competitive sections. These are useful data points for understanding the festival's organization; they do not equate to a list of selected films nor guarantee ticket availability for a specific session.
Official Dates and Event Structure
The 2027 edition is announced for January 21 to 31. CU Boulder information places premiere screenings between January 21 and 26, with the annual gala on the 22nd. It is advisable to read these dates as the announced calendar for a future edition and to verify the specific schedule for each activity through the festival's official channels. The Relocation to Boulder, Colorado
The festival has announced its move from Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah, to Boulder starting in 2027. CU Boulder will be one of its hosts and plans to use Macky Auditorium, Roe Green Theater, Old Main Chapel, and Muenzinger Auditorium. The university locates these venues within an approximate two-mile radius and reports improvements to three campus spaces to prepare for the event.Expansion of Competitive Programming
For 2027, the four central competition categories (U.S. Dramatic, World Cinema Dramatic, U.S. Documentary, and World Cinema Documentary) will expand their quota to 12 films each. Other sections such as Premieres, NEXT, and Midnight will also undergo expansion. The Offscreen program, formerly known as Beyond Film, will incorporate live podcast recordings and more artist events.A Call for Entries Is Not a Selection
Calls for entries and programming serve distinct functions: presenting a work does not equate to being selected. To know which films comprise an edition, one must consult its programming, without deducing titles from announcements about facilities, tickets, or the receipt of submissions. This overview focuses on organizational announcements; it does not provide a list of selected works.Available Tickets and Packages
CU Boulder outlines the announced conditions for the Ignite package, presented by Adobe: it targets individuals aged 18 to 25 and enrolled students. It includes ten in-person tickets and five online tickets for $275, for screenings from January 24 to 31. These conditions do not guarantee that packages or tickets will remain available for a specific film. Availability and purchase conditions must be verified through the festival's official channel. How to Interpret Festival Announcements
Dates, venues, and sections describe the framework of the edition, not the content of each film. Similarly, an access initiative for youth or students does not imply free entry to all activities. Separating calendar, programming, and purchase helps consult the correct data: the general announcement provides orientation, while the schedule and conditions of each session specify attendance.Key takeaways
