From Playable Icon to Filmed Space: Two Models of Adaptation in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie
The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie begin with worlds players learn by traversing, testing and altering them. In bringing them to the screen, they cannot retain that agency: they must replace it with framing, duration, sound and a fixed narrative route. The comparison makes it possible to distinguish between reproducing references and translating a game logic into audiovisual form.
From Agency to Orientation: A Viewing Vocabulary
Let us call gameplay the set of actions and constraints through which a player learns what they can do in a world: jump, collect, craft, avoid, explore, assess a risk. It is not synonymous with plot. Agency, meanwhile, is the ability to choose among possible actions and test their consequences. A conventional film cannot materially give viewers that ability; what it can do is create an impression of decision through staging, editing or identification with a character.Space also changes status. In a video game, a space can be a learning interface: its form indicates where to go, what distance can be crossed, or which area requires preparation. In cinema, space is built shot by shot. The question is no longer only “what can be done here?”, but “what do I need to know now in order to understand the next gesture?” Cinematic orientation depends on clear relations among bodies, directions, goals and dangers. A cut can conceal a journey that would have been a task in the game; a long shot can turn explorable territory into an image of scale; a camera movement can lend the energy of a choice to a compulsory route.
With this vocabulary, fidelity is no longer a single scale. There is iconographic fidelity when a pipe, a block, a creature or a tool reappears. There is fidelity to rules when those elements retain intelligible consequences: a transformation changes the possibilities for action, a material makes construction possible, night alters risk. And there is formal translation when the film finds an audiovisual equivalent for the way the game orients, rewards or surprises. Both films contain all three dimensions, but rank them differently.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie: The World as a Chain of Visible Trials
The Super Mario Bros. Movie organises much of its energy through a logic of passage. From the opening transition between Brooklyn and the fantasy universe, spaces are presented as thresholds: a pipe is not decoration but a device that changes world and scale. The film separates Mario and Luigi so that the spatial contrast is immediate. The Mushroom Kingdom appears as an open, bright field filled with directional cues; the territory Luigi reaches, by contrast, compresses information through darkness, twisted trees, fog and threats emerging from the background. The opposition does not reproduce a play session, but uses the visibility and legibility of the environment to assign distinct narrative states.Mario’s learning sequence clearly condenses the platform-game model. The training course arranges obstacles in a series: jumps, heights, moving surfaces, impacts and falls. Its function is not to simulate the difficulty of controlling a gamepad, which is impossible from a cinema seat, but to make the relationship among error, persistence and improvement visible. Editing reduces repetitions, selects expressive failures and retains only the variations needed for progress to be intelligible. Where a player may repeat a section for minutes, the film creates an emotional progression: Mario’s body learns because framing and cutting turn his attempts into a dramatic line.
The kart race extends that operation. Rather than asking the audience to calculate trajectories, the sequence distributes information in layers: first, preparation introduces vehicles and components; then comes a race whose meaning depends on recognisable goals and rivals; finally, cutting, turns and changes of scale accelerate. Objects associated with the game work because they do not merely appear: they change the speed of the action or the characters’ positions. The film turns an inventory of powers and vehicles into a grammar of cause and effect.
This explains both its effectiveness and its limit. Its model favours rapid recognition and forward momentum. A landscape is often a stop along a route. The film translates the functional clarity of a level well, but rarely lingers over the lateral curiosity a player may feel toward an environment. Space is made to be read quickly, not inhabited for long.
A Minecraft Movie: The Block as Material, Rule and Collective Gesture
A Minecraft Movie faces a different challenge. Minecraft is not identified primarily with a single route through levels, but with a set of materials and rules from which each player can build shelters, tools, paths or machines. The film cannot transfer that breadth of possibility without undoing its linear narrative. Its solution is to turn building into visible action and to use the block world as matter the characters must learn to manipulate.Entry into the Overworld places characters who do not master that environment before forms, creatures and resources requiring a new way of reading. The strangeness is not established through geometric design alone, but through the relation between human bodies and cubic surfaces. The scale of the block makes the adaptation problem tangible: what is, in the game, an elementary unit for transforming the landscape must, in live action, offer texture, weight, volume and contact. The decision to combine constructed physical sets with visual effects helps prevent the world from being perceived solely as a digital background; the production treated its materials and locations as surfaces with which performers could interact.
The crafting and defence scenes shift Minecraft’s logic into a dramaturgy of necessity. Building does not appear as an endless activity, but as a response to an urgency: taking shelter, reaching a place, solving a danger or collaborating with others. That reduction is inevitable in a film of fixed duration, yet it retains a central rule: resources are not mere ornaments, because they gain value through the action they make possible. A block ceases to be an abstract piece when it becomes part of a solution shown by the editing step by step.
Unlike Mario, the film depends less on a succession of bounded trials than on the transformation of the environment. Framing often emphasises the before and after of an intervention: empty ground and a raised structure, a scattered threat and an improvised barrier, a disoriented group and space turned into an operational place. The procedure offers a partial equivalent to the game: not the player’s freedom, but the satisfaction of seeing an idea materially alter the world.
There is a loss here as well. Cinema turns Minecraft’s open creativity into decisions made by specific characters and subject to conflict. The film can show crafting, but it does not offer the time for wandering, private experimentation or purposeless construction that are part of the game experience. Its wager is not to preserve sandbox freedom, but to dramatise imagination as a shared capacity for solving problems.
Two Translations, Not a Competition of References
The central difference can be stated this way: The Super Mario Bros. Movie films space as a trajectory of trials; A Minecraft Movie films it as transformable material. In the first, viewers quickly understand which direction matters and which obstacle organises movement. In the second, interest more often lies in what can be done with the environment and what kind of solution the characters will invent. One draws on acceleration, succession and the goal; the other on crafting, modification and cooperation.This does not mean that Mario lacks construction or that Minecraft abandons the route. Both mix procedures. The difference is one of priority. When Mario receives a new power, the cinematic question is usually how it will immediately reorganise a chase, a fight or a jump. When Minecraft presents materials or tools, the question tends to be what configuration of space they will make possible. In both cases, the game supplies recognisable signs; what matters to assess is whether those signs participate in organising actions.
This separates three outcomes. A superficial reference occurs when a familiar object passes through the shot without changing the conflict, orientation or relations among characters. World-building occurs when a detail expands the coherence of the universe, even if it does not directly propel the action. Formal adaptation arrives when a game rule or sensation finds a cinematic function: the jump becomes a unit of editing, transformation redefines movement, construction alters dramatic space. Neither film needs to achieve that translation in every scene. But the more it depends on identifying an isolated wink, the less it is making use of what is specific to video games.
A Minimal Context: Why Fidelity Was Never Enough
The difficulty did not begin with these two films. Ever since cinema began to engage with video games, criticism has noted that interactivity and audiovisual representation do not occupy the same place. A film can evoke decisions, interfaces or gameplay viewpoints, but it still controls the order of the experience. The adaptations most useful for analysis are therefore not necessarily those that reproduce the most details, but those that recognise what must change when a system of actions becomes a work of fixed duration.Studies of space in video games help clarify the issue. In a game, the environment can narrate, orient and constrain at once; its design contributes to the production of meaning because the player traverses and interprets it. Cinema works with the same visual material by another route: the gaze is guided through framing, sound and editing. Adaptation is therefore not equivalent to transferring a map. It consists in deciding which aspect of that map will be perceptible as drama, atmosphere or rhythm.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie and A Minecraft Movie are useful precisely because they come from two game models that are difficult to confuse. One turns a tradition of forward movement and skill into an adventure of clear milestones. The other turns a world of constructive possibilities into a fable about imagining, making and surviving. Neither gives viewers back player agency. What they do is select one of its dimensions and subject it to the economy of the cinematic scene.
Questions for Watching the Next Adaptation
When faced with a future film based on a video game, it may be more productive to set aside the list of omissions and ask five questions. First: how does the film communicate where the characters are and which direction matters? Second: do recognisable objects genuinely change the actions, or do they only solicit recognition? Third: does editing turn a mechanic into rhythm, learning or tension? Fourth: does space behave as decoration, as an obstacle, or as matter the characters can change? Fifth: when the game offers freedom, does the film find a concrete way to dramatise it without pretending the viewer still has the controls?Answering them does not require celebrating every adaptation choice. It does, however, make criticism more precise. One may conclude that a sequence sacrifices exploration for speed, that a reference halts the narrative, that a game rule loses clarity, or that a film finds an effective image for a sensation the player knew in another way. That is the gain of seeing adaptation as a problem of form: not asking only whether cinema has copied a video game well, but what cinema has done with what it could not copy.
